Training and Development

The Mail has an excellent reputation for its staff training provision.

Some roles require previous experience of a similar role, or specific formal qualifications. Further training is also given.

But there are many other roles for which we recruit people without experience, who nevertheless show they have potential for development with the benefit of the training we provide. We believe in recruiting people with the right sort of attitude – for example, being willing to learn constantly, and having a positive outlook rather than seeing the downside – because they tend to be more successful and valuable employees.

We use a variety of training methods, such as:

  • Groups of colleagues from the same team or department learning together.
  • Groups from different departments.
  • Individual training with a manager or department trainer, usually whilst you’re working on your job.
  • Mentoring – where an experienced colleague is assigned to help your development.

Training for managers is very comprehensive, covering skills in managing people such as:

  • Staff recruitment and selection.
  • Personal impact on others and effective communication.
  • Delivering staff appraisals.
  • Managing underperformance.
  • Project and change management.
